01 What we do
We are leaders in carry. We make products that keep your gear organized, protected, and accessible, so you are free to adventure, commute, and create. We pride ourselves in creating true utility through elegant, thoughtful design.
Let us help you #findyourpeak.
02 The Beginning
In 2010, a fresh-faced, Minnesota-born, good-to-know-ya fella named Peter Dering went on a 4-month trip around the world. During this trip he learned that carrying a DSLR camera is a pain in the touchis. He returned to his San Francisco apartment and did what any responsible person would do: quit his nice job and spent 10 months designing a little thingy-dingy for carrying cameras.
In May 2011 Peter launched that thingy-dingy (we now call it Capture) on a fledgling website called Kickstarter. It worked, and Peak Design was born. Peter started hiring friends, friends of friends, and random people he met at concerts. Peak Design got itself a little office in San Francisco’s Dogpatch neighborhood.
We now have 34 full-time employees, 100+ products, and over hundreds of people working full time to manufacture those products in our partner factories. Getting here took hard work, midwestern frugality, intense arguments, frustrating screw-ups, and plenty of good luck. But we don’t think we’d even have a seat at the table if it weren’t for crowdfunding.
Since 2011, we’ve raised $15M+ over the course of 6 Kickstarter projects. Not to get all horn-tooty, but we’re the world’s most crowdfunded active company. Through Kickstarter, we have found the most passionate, loyal, straight-up stoked customers in the world. The funds we raise in our campaigns allow us to focus on our customers and products, and not on achieving growth goals that traditional investors often demand.
Making stuff is fun. Even little kids know that. We like to think of the Peak Design office as a preschool arts-and-crafts table with fancier materials, louder tools and about the same amount of pants-peeing. When it comes to making stuff, we believe that less is more and that simplicity yields elegance. We believe that versatility should be baked in so that our products are used in ways that we never even imagined. We believe products should solve real problems and not invent them. When we launch products, we never stop trying to improve them. Lastly, we believe that people who use and love our gear deserve a lifetime guarantee.
We didn’t start this company to put on suits and act all hoity-toity—that’s what New Year’s Eve is for. With that in mind, say hello to the Peak Design team. We’re a rag-tag posse of rubes and bumpkins who have banded together to make badass carry gear, and also make use of group booking discounts at the Olive Garden.
